Did you know? Happy employees are 12% more productive than their unhappy counterparts.

If you’re looking for some simple ways to spread more sunshine and lollipops around the office, check out these 5 tips.

Tip #1: Pour on the Praise

When you were little, do you remember yelling to your parents, “Watch me! Watch me!” as you dove into the pool or did a fancy dance move?

We all have a basic, driving need to feel valued and recognized. Tell people when they’re doing a great job. So simple yet so effective! This can be done face-to-face, in a card, or in front of others in a group meeting.

Tip #2: Get Personal

We’re not saying you have to invite Fran over for Thanksgiving dinner, but take some time to get to know everyone on a personal level. A quick cup of coffee is always a great go-to.

Getting to know people (what they love, what makes them tick) will make them feel valued. And this way, you can make rewards you give out more personal. Instead of giving the office vegetarian a gift card to a local barbeque joint, you’ll know exactly what would put a smile on her face.

Tip #3: Have Some Fun

All work and no play? No good! When people like coming to work, it goes a long way toward employee retention. Whether it’s a crock pot cook-off or team fitness challenge, start having some fun! Not sure what to do? Ask your employees … they likely have some great ideas up their sleeves!

Tip #4: Lead By Example

Putting your money where your mouth is, walking the talk, being the change you want to see … however you say it, leaders have to lead by example to boost morale in their teams. AKA: if you’re a stickler for others showing up on time, don’t waltz in hours late!

Tip #5: Perk Things Up

Move over, coffee and donuts. We’re talking perks that make a big difference in people’s happy factors. Instead of small cash bonuses where the impact is short-lived, give employees an experience they’ll remember and talk to their friends about. It could be as simple as tickets to a show or a random day off to spend with family. There are lots of ideas here … get creative!
